Experience the Convenience and Comfort of Our In-House Radiology and Mammography Services At Atrium

We understand that teens have unique care needs and that’s why Atrium offers compassionate health care specifically designed for teens and adolescent patients.

Adolescent gynecologic care is a specialized branch of healthcare dedicated to the unique needs and concerns of young girls and teenagers as they transition into womanhood. This crucial aspect of adolescent healthcare focuses on providing a safe and supportive environment for girls to address their reproductive and gynecological health. It encompasses a wide range of services, including education about menstruation and puberty, discussions on sexual health and contraception, guidance on menstrual hygiene, and the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological conditions like menstrual disorders or infections. Beyond physical health, adolescent gynecologic care also emphasizes emotional well-being, encouraging open communication and trust between patients and healthcare providers, empowering young individuals to take control of their reproductive health, make informed decisions, and navigate the journey to adulthood with confidence and self-assurance.

Dear Parent/Guardian of a Teenager:

At Atrium OB/GYN, we strive to provide the best healthcare possible for your teenager. We encourage you to be actively involved in your teen’s healthcare and we make sure to promote open communication between parent, teen and the health professional. While many adolescent teenagers are accompanied to the office visit by their parent/guardian, we will often see teenagers by themselves. This teaches them to learn how to take care of their health, while giving them the chance to talk to us privately if desired. Again, we will always encourage teenagers to talk to a parent about important health issues in any given situation.

It is important to note that we offer your teenager 100% “confidential” services. Confidentiality is crucial when taking care of teenagers because many adolescents fear that if they tell their health professional the truth, it will get back to their parents. “Confidential” means that a teenager can trust that we will not tell anyone else, including parents or their school unless they give us permission. The one exception to this would be if we think that there is a serious threat to the teenager’s health.

In Ohio, minors 12 years and older may give their own consent for treatment by a healthcare professional. They are protected by Federal and State privacy laws that restrict parents from accessing their child’s medical records without the teen’s consent. Again, we strive for an open communication between parents and their children, but we will respect a teenagers request for confidentiality, as we do for all of our patients.

We look forward to taking care of your teenager. Please feel free to contact us regarding any concerns you may have about your teen.

Adolescent FAQs

It’s generally recommended for girls to have their first gynecological visit between the ages of 21 or when they become sexually active, whichever comes first. These early visits often focus on education, discussions about puberty, and addressing any concerns.

An adolescent gynecological exam may include a discussion about menstrual cycles, sexual health, and contraception. A physical exam might involve an external genital examination and, if necessary, a pelvic exam.

Pap smears are typically not recommended for adolescents under the age of 21, unless there are specific medical concerns or risk factors. Routine Pap smears usually begin at age 21 or as recommended by the healthcare provider.

It’s important to educate adolescents about what to expect during menstruation, including the typical duration, flow, and common symptoms like cramps. Encourage the use of sanitary products like pads or tampons and discuss proper menstrual hygiene.

Open and honest communication is essential. Start the conversation early, providing age-appropriate information. Discuss the importance of safe sex, the different types of contraception, and the potential risks associated with sexual activity.

Common gynecological issues in adolescents include irregular periods, heavy or painful periods, vaginal infections, and concerns related to sexual health. These issues can often be addressed and treated effectively with the help of a healthcare provider.

In many cases, adolescents have the right to confidential healthcare. However, it’s important to encourage open communication between your child and their healthcare provider to ensure their well-being and address any concerns or questions.

Vaccinations like the HPV vaccine are recommended for adolescents to protect against certain types of cancer. Consult with a healthcare provider for the most up-to-date vaccination recommendations.

You can start by asking your primary care provider for a referral or contact your local healthcare facility for recommendations. Look for healthcare providers who specialize in adolescent medicine or gynecology.
